Washington moves on carbon pollution cap

Washington Gov. Jay Inslee proposed a stringent cap-and-trade program to curb emissions of carbon pollution from industrial polluters.

The move is one piece of a larger package that will help the state meet its targets to cut greenhouse gas emissions, The Associated Press reports.

{mosads}”It is primarily and foremost an issue of health for our children and our grandchildren,” Inslee said.

“It’s not only a good idea, it’s the law,” he added.

Supporters cheered the proposal as a strong step toward protecting human health and the environment. But Republicans control the state legislature, and are sure to push back against the cap on pollution.
