Pope Francis warns of global ‘suicide’ without climate action

Pope Francis warned Monday that the world was “at the limits of suicide” and must work to immediately to thwart climate change.

{mosads}The pope suggested it was a “now or never” moment to act on climate, during a lengthy news conference, according to Reuters.

“Every year the problems are getting worse. We are at the limits … of suicide,” he said.

The pontiff over the summer released an encyclical on tackling climate change and has repeatedly spoken out on the issue, including during a trip to the U.S. in September.

The pope spoke to reporters as he flew home to Rome from his recent visit to Africa, where he also raised climate issues.

“The grave environmental crisis facing our world demands an ever greater sensitivity to the relationship between human beings and nature,” he said on Wednesday in Kenya at the start of his trip.

His latest remarks Monday come as President Obama and leaders from around the world gather in Paris for a United Nations conference on efforts to combat climate change.
