Christmas weekend storms kill dozens
Severe weather across the country killed at least 43 people over the holiday weekend, with more storms on tap for Monday.
Tornadoes in Texas killed 11 people on Saturday, USA Today reports. Eight people died in the Dallas suburb of Garland, Texas, and local officials said 600 homes and businesses were damaged there as well.
{mosads}Nine tornadoes rolled through the state through Saturday night, The Dallas Morning News reports. Garland was hit by an EF4 tornado, with winds up to 200 miles per hour, on Saturday, the National Weather Service reported.
At least 20 people have died due to tornadoes this month, a Storm Prediction Center official tweeted on Sunday, the most in 62 years. For only the second time on record, three straight Decembers have included tornado fatalities in the United States.
Eight other people died during severe flooding across Missouri, where record rain has closed up to 200 roads across the state.
The weekend’s rain made 2015 the wettest year on record in Missouri, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports. Gov. Jay Nixon (D) declared a state of emergency on Sunday and told residents to avoid traveling around the state if possible.
Five other people died due to severe weather in Illinois, according to USA Today, after flooding in the Southeast killed 19 others last week.
The storms come as part of a rash of severe weather events around the United States. The East Coast, including Washington, D.C., saw record high temperatures last week and into the weekend. A storm system on Monday will bury much of the central United States in snow, including up to 16 inches in parts of Texas.
