Sen. Begich’s campaign says he opposes carbon tax

Sen. Mark Begich’s (D-Alaska) campaign is denying GOP allegations that the freshman Democrat, who faces reelection next year, supports imposing a tax on carbon emissions.

The National Republican Senatorial Committee (NRSC) on Wednesday launched robo-calls alleging Begich backs a “radical” carbon tax.

Not so, the Begich campaign said.

“Senator Begich’s number one priority is economic stability – and that means protecting Alaska families who already pay the second-highest energy prices in the country by not increasing energy taxes,” the campaign said Wednesday, and noted “energy taxes” includes a carbon tax.

The NRSC is citing a March vote Begich took on an amendment to a nonbinding budget resolution. Our story this morning on the NRSC robo-calls unwraps the amendment vote and dueling interpretations of it.
