Senate Dem: Trump is attacking science
Sen. Ed Markey (D-Mass.) on Tuesday said President Trump’s executive order on climate policies is an attack on science.
“It’s a declaration of war. It basically looks at every one of President Obama’s actions and tries to strip them off the books,” Markey told MSNBC’s “All In.”
“This is basically an attack on science, on climate, on the clean energy revolution which has been creating hundreds of thousands of new jobs because of Obama-era policies.”
{mosads}Trump on Tuesday signed a wide-ranging executive order aimed at creating jobs in the fossil fuel industry and rolling back Obama’s climate change policies.
The order instructs the Environmental Protection Agency to formally consider repealing the Clean Power Plan.
The plan was a central piece of Obama’s second-term climate agenda, calling for a 32 percent cut in the power sector’s carbon dioxide emissions by 2030.
Markey said Trump’s move shows the president remains in denial about the danger presented by climate change.
“[Trump] refuses to accept the reality that the planet is running a fever,” he said. “There are no emergency rooms for planets.”
“And we have to engage in preventive care to reduce the temperature before it causes catastrophic consequences, not just for the United States, but all across the planet. Today he just basically said he’s going to deny, he’s going to defund and for us that means a disaster is now possible.”
