President Trump is reportedly slated to meet Tuesday with representatives from multiple nuclear developers, where the group is expected to push to sell its equipment internationally.
Bloomberg reported that consulting firm IP3 International set up the meeting, which will include officials from nuclear power giant Exelon Corp., General Electric Co., TerraPower LLC and other companies.
Those in attendance are hoping Trump will address how U.S. nuclear developers can play a role in providing power to other countries, Bloomberg reported, noting that the president regularly touts U.S. oil and natural gas exports.
{mosads}Bloomberg reported that one option is to push for an agreement with Middle East countries, including Jordan and Saudi Arabia.
The Trump administration last year was in the process of negotiating a “123 agreement” with the Saudis that would allow the kingdom to buy nuclear reactors from U.S. companies. The administration has framed a potential deal as important to securing U.S. jobs and ensuring the Saudis don’t seek similar business with another country.
Lawmakers urged the administration to suspend talks on the agreement following the killing of Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi. The U.S. resident and Washington Post columnist was killed after entering the Saudi Consulate in Turkey on Oct. 2.
Trump has regularly touted America’s energy production, and campaigned on pledges to revitalize the coal industry. In his State of the Union address earlier this month, Trump declared that his administration had “unleashed a revolution in American energy,” highlighting that the country is a top producer of oil and natural gas.
