Deepest-ever dive finds human trash on sea floor

An explorer who completed the deepest-ever sea dive on Monday found human trash on the seafloor, BBC .

Victor Vescovo, an American businessman, found plastic bags and candy wrappers at the bottom of the Pacific Ocean’s Mariana Trench.

“It was very disappointing to see obvious human contamination of the deepest point in the ocean,” Vescovo told Reuters.

{mosads}At nearly 36,000 feet below the ocean’s surface, the bottom of the Mariana Trench has only been visited by humans three times, first in 1960.

Scientists involved with the latest expedition will also reportedly test creatures they found on the sea floor to see if they contain microplastics.

The United Nations estimates that there are more than 100 million tons of plastic waste in the world’s oceans.

Vescovo is traveling to the deepest places in the world for an upcoming documentary for the Discovery Channel, according to BBC.
