300 arrested in London climate protests

London police arrested more than 300 people at climate change protests in the city on Monday, Reuters reports

The organizing group, the Extinction Rebellion, protested Monday in several countries including Britain, Germany, Austria, France and New Zealand in a push for politicians to commit to cutting carbon emissions.

The group is calling for Britain to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions to net zero by 2025, cutting the government’s 2050 target by 25 years, according to Reuters. {mosads}

Some activists barricaded themselves to vehicles in Westminster while others filled Trafalgar Square and blocked Lambeth and Westminster bridges, according to the BBC

Extinction Rebellion London tweeted video footage showing protesters filling the streets.

Conservative British Prime Minister Boris Johnson criticized the protesters as “uncooperative crusties” at an event on Monday and said his security did not want him to come for fear of his safety, according to Reuters.

“They said there was some risk that I would be egged,” he said.
