1 dead after after magnitude 7 quake strikes near Acapulco

At least one person is dead after a powerful magnitude 7.0 earthquake struck near Acapulco on Tuesday.

The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) said the epicenter of the earthquake was centered roughly 10 miles outside Acapulco, a tourist resort city in Mexico. It struck just before 9 p.m. local time, according to The New York Times.

One man is reported dead after being crushed by a falling post in the town of Coyuca de Benítez west of Acapulco, the Times reported, citing Héctor Astudillo, the governor of the Guerrero state.

Mexico’s Federal Electricity Commission said 1.6 million people in Mexico City and the states of Mexico, Guerrero, Oaxaca and Morelos were left without power following the quake.

The Mexico seismological agency reported 92 aftershocks had struck in the hours following the earthquake, according to the Times.

The quake caused the ground to noticeably shake in Mexico City, which is located more than 230 miles away from the epicenter.

Power lines and buildings swayed for several seconds and residents hurried outside to find safe ground, the Times reported.

Trees fell and large boulders barreled into roads, causing several states to lose power, according to Reuters.
