Nine states and D.C. win “Race to the Top” grants
The states have to show they will use the money to make specific changes to their education systems including greater teacher accountability and support for the growth of charter schools.
States vying for the money had already started making changes to increase their chances at winning a grant.
In New York, for example, the state is expected to create a data system to better track student progress as well as teacher performance so better teachers are rewarded while weaker educators are moved out of the school system.
