Boehner tweets that all tax cuts should be extended
The scenario is unlikely without support from Democrats in the Senate, several of whom have already said they support extending all the tax cuts until the economy recovers.
Nebraska Sen. Ben Nelson (D) and Sen. Joe Lieberman (I-Conn.) have both announced their support for extending all the tax breaks, leaving the Democrats short of the 60 votes they’ll need to pass legislation extending only the tax cuts for the middle class.
White House press secretary Robert Gibbs hit the morning news shows on Monday, saying he hopes that “Boehner’s comments suggest a willingness to agree with the president.”
President Obama has been adamant about his position that extending the tax cuts for the nation’s wealthier taxpayers would cost $700 billion over 10 years, according to a Congressional Budget Office estimate.
