Household incomes continued drop in 2009

During that same period, 31 states had increases in the percentage of people in poverty.

Meanwhile, nearly 20 percent reported incomes of $100,000 or more in 2009, down almost a percentage point from 2008.

Those top earners received 49.4 percent of all income generated in the United States, compared with the 3.4 percent earned by those who fell below the poverty line.

In contrast, almost one in four families earned less than $25,000, an increase of 1 percentage point.
