Most see GOP Pledge as campaign gimmick, poll finds

The Pledge vows to continue tax cuts enacted by President George W. Bush and provide businesses with an additional 20 percent tax deduction. It also freezes spending at 2008 levels.

While most aren’t taking the Pledge seriously, 53 percent of respondents believe Republicans will act the document if they take control of Congress next year.

“Most voters are skeptical about the Republicans’ new national Pledge to America, but most think the GOP is at least somewhat likely to do what it promises if it gains control of Congress,” the poll states.

Another 40 percent do not expect Republicans to follow-up on the promises contained in the Pledge, with 17 percent saying it is “not at all likely.”

The poll tapped the opinions of 1,000 likely voters between Sept. 26-27.
