Poll: Record number say there is too much regulation

A clear majority of respondents are also critical of the size of government, with 59 percent believing the federal government has too much power, up from 51 percent a year ago. 

Independent voters are siding with Republicans on this issue, with 65 percent believing the federal government has too much power, 60 percent saying the federal government is doing too much and 53 percent believing there is too much regulation. Republican totals are 79 percent, 77 percent and 69 percent, respectively. Roughly one-third of Democrats share the same view on each of these issues.

“An expanded proportion of Americans in 2010 believe the government has overstepped its bounds — growing too intrusive and too powerful,” Gallup states. “Also, nearly half now consider the government a threat to individual liberty.
