Progressive Dem PAC alarmed over deficit meetings
The e-mail noted that Senate Majority Whip Dick Durbin (D-Ill.), Senate Budget Committee Chairman Kent Conrad (D-N.D.) and Republican Sens. Mike Crapo (R-Idaho) and Tom Coburn (R-Okla.) have been meeting on the possible legislation.
The group met Monday and Conrad was to pitch its ideas to Democrats at a Senate retreat Wednesday.
The PAC noted that the debt commission recommended raising the retirement age by the year 2075 and adjusting how cost-of-living increases are calculated in order to scale back benefits.
“We want to make sure that Congress understands what they are doing when they plan to cut the rug out from under working people who need Social Security to support themselves, their families, and their communities. That’s why we are collecting stories from folks like you to share with Congress and to put in TV ads for everyone to see,” the e-mail stated.
It also sought a $5 contribution from supporters to fund the ad campaign.
