IRS: Time running out for those wanting ’07 refunds

Under current law, most taxpayers have three years to claim any refund due to them. The IRS release speculates that some of those who did not file for 2007 were not required to because of their income levels.

Those taxpayers who do want to receive a 2007 refund will also have to have filed 2008 and 2009 returns, the IRS release said. The 2007 returns would also be used to pay back any debts owed to the agency and could also be used for unpaid child support or federal student loan debts.

According to an IRS chart, North Dakota has the fewest residents (1,600) currently leaving their refunds on the table, while California has the most (124,000). Wyoming residents had the highest median potential refund, at $788.
