Gallup: Economic concerns highest in two years
Gallup’s findings come as President Obama’s approval ratings are on something of a rebound in the aftermath of bin Laden’s death. But at the same time, Americans appear skeptical of the president’s stewardship of the economy.
Americans’ top two concerns — the economy and unemployment — have both risen since April, while worries about federal debt have fallen. Those results come as Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner has told Congress that the government has hit its debt limit and called on lawmakers to increase the ceiling as quickly as possible.
{mosads}Republicans and Democrats are currently debating what deficit reduction measures should be included in any deal to raise the debt limit.
The two parties, and independents for that matter, both agree that the economy and unemployment are the two most important problems, Gallup found.
Independents and Republicans both put deficits in the No. 3 slot, but that issue slid to No. 4, behind gas prices, for Democrats.
