Cummings urges subpoena of mortgage servicers

In February, the panel’s top Democrat sent letters to 10 of the nation’s largest mortgage servicing companies seeking documents relating to allegations of wrongful foreclosures against military service members and their families, “robo-signing” of foreclosure documents filed with courts, inflated fees, fraud, deficient record keeping and other deceptive practices.

The federal government and all 50 states have launched investigations into the practices of the mortgage servicers.

Also in February, Cummings requested an audit from the Special Inspector General for the Troubled Asset Relief Program on mortgage servicer conduct that the IG called “abysmal.”

In April, Cummings and Sen. Jack Reed (D-R.I.) introduced a measure aimed at increasing consumer protections and transparency and holding servicers accountable for providing relief to qualified homeowners.
