GOP senator to White House: Let’s reform the tax code
Both the White House and top GOP lawmakers have expressed in interest in tax reform — though the administration’s focus appears to be more on the corporate code, while Republicans would like to tackle the individual side as well.
{mosads}The new deficit-reduction supercommittee, which will meet for the first time this month, is also expected to at least discuss tax reform in the weeks to come.
Still, it would also be difficult to fundamentally overhaul the tax code before the supercommittee’s Nov. 23 deadline. And both the president, who wants a continuation of the current payroll tax holiday, and Republicans, who have called for a new deduction for small-business owners, have been pushing for more short-term tax proposals in recent days and weeks.
Heller, who came to the Senate in May after Sen. John Ensign (R) resigned, is expected to face Rep. Shelley Berkley (D-Nev.) in one of next year’s more highly watched Senate races.
The senator’s letter to the White House also comes just days after Heller said the administration had “failed miserably” when it came to the economy.
