Gallup: Most holiday shoppers going online

People in the U.S. are now five times more likely to use the Internet for holiday shopping than they were 15 years ago, according to Gallup.

Gallup says the 53 percent of those surveyed who plan on shopping online these holidays mark the first time that a majority will use the Internet to help check off their list.

{mosads}When Gallup first asked the question, in 1998, only 10 percent of holiday shoppers said they’d use the Internet.

Still, even with the fast increase, more shoppers plan on using brick-and-mortar stores than the Internet as part of their holiday routine this year.

Around three-quarters of shoppers, Gallup says, plan on using department stores or discount stores this year.

In Washington, retailers continue to lobby for legislation that would give states more leeway to collect sales tax on online purchases made outside their borders.
