US, Japan issues weigh down trade talks
U.S. officials are insisting that “great momentum” has been made in Trans-Pacific trade talks, but significant divisions between the Americans and Japanese remain.
The Wall Street Journal reports that Japan made initial concessions on automobiles and beef, when it became the last to enter Trans-Pacific Partnership talks this year.
But now Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe is facing pushback at home on those issues, while Vice President Biden and other U.S. officials want Tokyo to open up even more markets.
U.S. officials are facing their own pressure over issues like currency manipulation.
