Julián Castro officially took the helm on Monday at the Department of Housing and Urban Development.

Castro, who was confirmed by the Senate on July 9, was sworn in as HUD’s 16th secretary where he will oversee the nation’s housing programs and play a key role in an overhaul of the mortgage finance system.

Castro rose to national prominence after a speech two years ago at the Democratic National Convention.

“Julián is a proven leader, a champion for safe, affordable housing and strong, sustainable neighborhoods,” said President Obama after Castro’s confirmation.

“I know that together with the dedicated professionals at HUD, Julián will help build on the progress we’ve made battling back from the Great Recession, rebuilding our housing market, reducing homelessness among veterans, and connecting neighborhoods with good schools and good jobs that help our citizens succeed.”
