Heritage slams GOP for amnesty ‘blank check’

If House Republicans choose to block President Obama’s executive action on immigration with a rescission bill next year, it would be a “blank check” for amnesty, Heritage Action said Wednesday.

Rep. Hal Rogers (R-Ky.), chairman of the House Appropriations Committee, raised the idea on Tuesday as members of his conference debated how to respond to the forthcoming order.

{mosads}Instead of blocking the executive order in the lame-duck session, which some conservatives want to do, Rogers said the GOP-controlled Congress could rescind funding meant for the immigration action.

“Heritage Action welcomes creative thinking from congressional Republicans so long as creativity is not a synonym for inaction or delay. Clearly the promise of a future rescission bill is nothing more than a blank check for Obama’s executive amnesty,” said Dan Holler, communications director for the conservative group.

Rogers and his panel are putting together an omnibus spending package of 12 appropriations bills that would fund the government through September 2015. Lawmakers have until Dec. 12 to pass a new spending bill or risk a shutdown.

Rep. Steve King (R-Iowa) told reporters Tuesday that Rogers’s proposal might not be successful if Republicans don’t have the necessary votes to override a presidential veto in the new Congress.
