Coburn: $70 billion in federal funds can’t reach target

The Oklahoma Republican, now in his second term in the Senate, has crafted a reputation as a deficit hawk during his time in Congress.

{mosads}Coburn backed the plan from President Obama’s fiscal commission and released a separate plan last year that would save roughly $9 trillion over a decade. The senator has also had a high-profile spat with Grover Norquist, the anti-tax activist, over Coburn’s openness to include revenues in a deficit-reduction deal.

Coburn’s report found, among other things, Detroit hasn’t spent more than $100 million intended to help its education system and that millions of dollars for the treatment of HIV and AIDS have laid unused.

The analysis also states that almost $3 million remains on a transportation earmark for the Atlanta Olympics — which happened in 1996.
