Poll: Consumer spending flat in June

Consumer spending averaged $90 per day in June, unchanged from the previous two months, according to a survey released Monday by Gallup.

The latest average is consistent with the June averages in 2013 and 2014.

Gallup asks survey participants to track their spending daily, estimating the amount spent online, in stores, at gas stations or restaurants. The amount must exclude home, vehicle or any major purchases, as well as monthly bills.

{mosads}Consumer spending began to rise in late 2012 and has hovered around the $90 mark since then.

Between 2009 and 2012, however, the average remained low — an average of $70 per day — in the wake of the recession and financial crisis.

Gallup said the flat level of consumer spending over the last few months reflects the public’s overall view of the economy being stagnant.

The latest survey is based Gallup Daily tracking interviews with 14,685 adults between June 1 and 30 with a 1 percentage point margin of error.
