Poll: Consumer spending flat in July

Consumer spending in July averaged $91 a day, according to a survey released Monday by Gallup, similar to the $90 level recorded in June.

Last month’s average is essentially unchanged from the monthly figures recorded since April, Gallup said.

{mosads}Gallup asked survey participants to track their daily spending, estimating the amount spent online, in stores and at gas stations or restaurants. The amount must exclude spending on homes and vehicles or any major purchases or monthly bills.

While the latest average is lower than the average recorded in July 2014, it’s higher than every other average for July since 2009.

Between 2009 and 2012, following the recession, consumer spending estimates averaged $70. After 2012, the marker began to rise. It has hovered for a while around an average of $90.

The latest survey polled 15,217 adults between July 1 and 31 and has a 5-percentage point margin of error.
