Carney: White House will support three-month debt-limit hike
White House press secretary Jay Carney on Tuesday said the House GOP’s decision to vote on legislation raising the debt ceiling is “certainly something we welcome.”
Carney said President Obama “welcomes” the decision and “would not stand in the way of the bill becoming law.”
{mosads}The House is expected to vote Wednesday on the bill, which would allow the government to make payments on its obligations until May 19.
The Club for Growth on Tuesday said it would not negatively score votes on the legislation, giving the bill’s prospects a significant boost. While a few Republicans in the House say they are leaning against the legislation, opposition from the conservative group could have been a difficult hurdle to overcome.
Obama’s support for the measure will also likely bring Democratic support behind the bill in the House and Senate.
