Gallup: Younger adults particularly opposed to online sales tax proposal

Supporters of the measure – like retail groups, Amazon and state government organizations – have stressed that consumers are often supposed to report taxes on online purchases, but that few actually do. (Backers also say that the $23 billion in sales taxes currently not being collected would be a great help to local governments, and that the current set-up hurts brick-and-mortar businesses.)

{mosads}The proposal has fairly broad Democratic support on Capitol Hill, but has divided Republicans. But as Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) and other GOP lawmakers said this week, younger Republicans in Congress and lawmakers newer to Capitol Hill are generally more likely to oppose the measure.

Opponents also dismiss the idea that the proposal isn’t a tax increase, and say it would expand the reach of state governments.
