Senate panel to vote on Trump Treasury pick Monday

The Senate Finance Committee will vote on Steven Mnuchin’s nomination to be Treasury secretary on Monday evening.

Committee Chairman Orrin Hatch (R-Utah) announced the move late Friday night.

Mnuchin, a former Goldman Sachs partner who later established is own hedge fund, testified before the panel earlier this month during a hearing that lasted more than five hours.

{mosads}Democrats grilled him on a range of topics including the foreclosure practices of his former bank, OneWest, and his use of businesses in tax havens, but it did not appear that there would be significant Republican opposition to his nomination.

“Committee members and the American people heard a strong case from Steven Mnuchin on why he should be Treasury Secretary,” Hatch said in a news release. “His seasoned career as a financial leader equip him with the ability to steer the American economy in the right direction. And his commitment to work with Congress to reform our outdated tax code and explore ways to improve our nation’s broken infrastructure system should garner the support of my colleagues on both sides of the aisle.”

So far, the full Senate has confirmed President Trump’s picks to lead the Defense and Homeland Security Departments and the CIA. The chamber also confirmed Trump’s pick to be ambassador to the United Nations.
