Week ahead: GOP digs into Dodd-Frank reform | Senate panel to vote on Trump Labor pick | CBO to release budget outlook

Republican lawmakers are pushing forward on reforming financial regulations with a series of hearings in the coming week.

The House Financial Services Committee will hold hearings on three portions of Dodd-Frank, the Wall Street reform law that have long been in Republican crosshairs.

They’ll start on Tuesday with a hearing on the way the Financial Stability Oversight Council designates “systemically important financial institutions,” nicknamed “too big to fail.” That will be followed by a hearing on the state of U.S. bank lending, which Republicans argue is hampered by Dodd-Frank.

The Financial Services Committee will cap off the week of hearings with a meeting on the impact of the Volcker Rule, which bans banks from making certain investments and trades with their own assets.

By holding hearings on their high-priority targets for Dodd-Frank reform, Republicans could shed light on how they’ll tackle these issues legislatively.

{mosads}Financial Services Republicans say they’re hoping to have some Dodd-Frank reform legislation on the floor by late April or early May. But with healthcare reform crumbling and other GOP legislative priorities ahead, that timeline could be pushed back.

The Senate will look to pick up work on staffing President Trump’s administration with a Thursday committee vote on Alexander Acosta’s nomination to be Labor secretary.

Acosta, was Trump’s second pick for the post, after fast food CEO Andy Puzder, who withdrew his nomination when it became clear he lacked enough support in the Senate.

Acosta generally sailed through his hearing before a Senate committee on Wednesday.

Also on the hill in the coming week, the Senate Banking Committee will hold a Tuesday hearing on boosting economic growth.

The Congressional Budget Office is also expected to release its long-term budget outlook on Thursday, with less than a month before government funding is set to expire.

Lawmakers and President Trump are both gearing up as a spending fight looms. Trump earlier this month unveiled his budget proposal, but it was met with widespread opposition from both Democrats and many Republicans over its deep spending cuts.
