House GOP to do ‘foxhole’ strategy check

House GOP leaders will conduct a “foxhole check” of their members Tuesday to consider their next moves in a fiscal fight with Democrats.

With time running out before an Oct. 17 deadline for raising the debt ceiling, it appears increasingly likely the fight over reopening the government will be merged with the debt ceiling clash.

{mosads}House Republicans will hash out their strategy at a conference meeting Tuesday morning.

“It will be rowdy,” one lawmaker said of the meeting.

Republicans have repeatedly been divided over their strategy in the fiscal fights, and polls suggest they are taking a hit with public opinion.

A new ABC News/Washington Post poll on Monday found 70 percent disapprove of the way Republicans are handling the fight.

Nearly six dozen House GOP members met late Monday to discuss the week ahead with House Majority Whip Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.)

Several members exiting the closed-door door meeting told The Hill that they endorsed the idea of combining the fight over funding the government with the battle over the borrowing limit.

Ideas about what to press for from the White House, however, are “all over the map,” according to a GOP lawmaker in the room.
