President Trump has announced that he plans to nominate a top aide to the Senate Finance Committee to a position in the Treasury Department.
The White House said Tuesday night that Trump intends to nominate Chris Campbell to be assistant secretary of the Treasury for financial institutions.
Campbell is the majority staff director to Republicans on the Senate Finance Committee, which has jurisdiction over tax, trade and health matters. He previously served as legislative director to Sen. Orrin Hatch (R-Utah), who is currently the chairman of the Finance Committee.
{mosads}Hatch said in a statement Wednesday that Campbell has been “helping to lead the charge on some of the toughest debates in Washington” while working for the Finance Committee.
“Whether it was working to reform our nation’s entitlement programs, overhauling the tax code, or breaking down barriers to trade, Chris’s counsel has always been thoughtful and strategic,” Hatch said. “I’m proud of the work he has done for me. Treasury will be lucky to have him.”
Hatch also announced that Jay Khosla will become the Finance Committee’s staff director when Campbell leaves. Khosla is currently the committee’s policy director.
The personnel moves come as congressional Republicans are working to repeal and replace ObamaCare and rewrite the tax code — two issues where Hatch has been playing a role.
Campbell is not the only Hatch aide to take a position in the administration. In January, Trump picked Hatch’s then-chief of staff, Robert Porter, to serve as White House staff secretary.
