Trump says he’ll decide on Fed chair within weeks

President Trump said Friday he has met with four prospective nominees to replace Federal Reserve Chair Janet Yellen when her term expires in February, and could make a decision within a few weeks.

“I’ve had four meetings for Fed chairman and I’ll be making a decision over the next two or three weeks,” Trump told reporters before leaving the White House.

One of those meetings was with former Federal Reserve Governor Kevin Warsh, Reuters reported.

Warsh, who was a Fed governor between 2006 and 2011, resigned over opposition to the Fed’s policy of “quantitative easing,” a monthly bond-buying program meant to jump-start the economy.

“He’s definitely more hawkish on the spectrum. He is quite a contrast to Yellen. It does seem he is the front-runner even though it’s not a sure thing he will be nominated,” an interest rates strategist at TD Securities in New York told Reuters.

In July, Trump suggested he may re-nominate Yellen to her current position, or replace her with National Economic Council Director Gary Cohn.

“I like her. I like her demeanor. I think she’s done a good job,” Trump said of Yellen during a Wall Street Journal interview in July. “I’d like to see rates stay low. She’s historically been a low-interest-rate person.”
