Poll: Most back tax increase for wealthy, corporations

A majority of Americans say they would like to see tax increases on wealthy Americans and large corporations, according to a new CBS News poll.

Fifty-six percent of individuals surveyed said they would like to see taxes increase on larger corporations, while 58 percent of those polled said they supported tax increases on wealthy Americans.

However, 60 percent of Americans polled said they would like to see tax cuts for the middle class, and 68 percent of those polled said they would like to see small business tax cuts.

The poll also shows that more Americans think President Trump will actually raise their taxes instead of lowering them.

Overall, 42 percent of those surveyed think that Trump will raise their individual taxes while only 25 percent think they will actually see a tax decrease. Twenty-seven percent said they expect to see no change.

The poll comes after House Republicans announced they would be delaying the release of their tax cut package on Tuesday.

Republican lawmakers are still trying to reach a consensus on the plan, which is now set to be released on Thursday. 

The legislation will cut the corporate tax rate from 35 percent to 20 percent and will lower the top rate for businesses whose income is taxed through the individual code to 25 percent.

The CBS News poll was conducted from Oct. 27 to 30, among 1,109 adults. The margin of error was plus or minus 4 percentage points.
