Markets open up despite COVID-19 spike

U.S. markets opened higher on Monday morning, with investors setting aside concerns over a resurgence of COVID-19 cases.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average was up more than 200 points, or 0.8 percent, while the S&P 500 increased 7 points, or 0.2 percent.

The increases followed a tough week for markets, which have seen increased volatility recently as coronavirus cases spiked and broke records in large states such as Florida and Texas.

While still hovering well above low points reached in March, the markets erased their June gains by Friday’s close.

More than half of states are seeing increases in coronavirus infections, and some have begun to reimpose closures and restrictions, raising questions as to how quickly the economy can recover.
