Ocasio-Cortez says framework deal not enough for infrastructure vote
Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) said a deal on a framework for the sweeping social benefits package that Democrats intend to pass under budget reconciliation rules would not be enough to secure her vote for a bipartisan infrastructure package on Friday.
Heading into a Democratic caucus meeting, Ocasio-Cortez reiterated demands made by progressives that the reconciliation package, which is expected to unlock funding for party-backed items like universal pre-kindergarten and tuition-free community college, must be passed before the physical infrastructure plan is brought to the floor.
“No. We need to vote,” Ocasio-Cortez said.
“At the end of the day, we’re laser focused on trying to make sure that we establish universal pre-K, free community college, expanding Medicare. That’s what we want to deliver for people and that’s what we’re fighting for,” she said.
Democrats for a second time put off a vote on the bipartisan infrastructure bill on Thursday as progressives threatened to oppose it.
House leaders now say a vote on the infrastructure deal is possible Friday, but progressives have not relented on their demands and it does not appear the infrastructure bill has the support to pass the House.
