Groups call to end Bush tax cuts for the wealthy

Several lawmakers have already questioned the wisdom of allowing them to expire while the economy struggles to recover from a historically rough recession. 

“This is going to be a fight,” said Jeffrey Hollender, a self-made millionaire who spoke at today’s event. “[But] there are a significant number of wealthy people that in fact support rolling back these tax cuts [for the wealthy].”

In related news, Wealth for the Common Good released a study today showing that over the past 50 years tax breaks have favored the most affluent. 

The report comes on the heels of a Quinnipiac University poll that found 60 percent of Americans in both political parties support raising income taxes on households earning more than $250,000. 

House Ways and Means Chairman Sandy Levin (D-Mich.) is expected to begin discussions on extending at least part of the Bush tax cuts after lawmakers return from the Easter recess.
