Lawmakers press Ag secretary on school lunch regulations
School lunches are big business for farmers and processed food manufacturers, whose bottom lines are directly affected by changes in serving recommendations because school districts must abide by national standards to get federal reimbursements.
In addition to the starchy vegetable rule, the American Frozen Food Institute is fighting proposals to eliminate frozen (but not canned) fruits that contain sugar and to downgrade the nutritional value of tomato paste used in pizza preparation.
The lawmakers also want clarification on the regulation’s cost estimate of $6.8 billion over five years.
