Top 10 ObamaCare quotes of 2013

The fight over ObamaCare produced a raft of memorable quotes in 2013.

{mosads}Both parties disseminated misinformation about the law and its rollout, and numerous lawmakers ended up in hot water over something they’d said about the law.

The Hill pulled together the 10 most memorable ObamaCare quotes of the year, presented in chronological order:

“I don’t want to pay for a sex-change operation … I’m not interested. I like being a boy.” – Rep. Paul Broun (R-Ga), Apr. 8

Broun was referring to incorrect reports that ObamaCare insurance plans cover sex change procedures.

“I think that probably no one fully anticipated when you have a law that phases in over time how much confusion that creates for a lot of people.” – Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius, April 8

Opponents of healthcare reform seized on Sebelius’s admission, which would prove prescient in October when HealthCare.gov crashed and burned.

“I think we paid a terrible price for health care. I would not have pushed it as hard.” — Former Rep. Barney Frank (D-Mass.), April 16

The former lawmaker’s candid assessment could hit home in 2014, when Democrats fear ObamaCare could cost them the Senate.

“I just see a huge train wreck coming down.” – Sen. Max Baucus (D-Mt.), April 17

Baucus, the primary architect of the healthcare law, now contends that his ObamaCare comment was taken out of context. But Republicans have made it a fixture of their messaging against the law.

“The implementation of this is fabulous.” – Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D-Ca.), June 26

By October, Pelosi and most Democrats were singing a different tune.

“I do not like green eggs and ham. I do not like them, Sam I Am.” – Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Tex.), Sept. 24

In September, Cruz sought to defund ObamaCare by hitting the Senate floor for a 21-hour speech to delay a continuing resolution that would keep the government open. The Tea Party favorite took a few minutes to read Dr. Seuss’ children’s classic “Green Eggs and Ham” to his two young daughters, who were watching from home.

“We’re not going to be disrespected. We have to get something out of this, and I don’t know what that even is.” – Rep. Marlin Stutzman (R-Ind.), Oct. 2

Stutzman’s remark crystallized the confusion in the GOP over the party’s failed strategy to defund ObamaCare by shutting down the government.

“I am sorry that they are finding themselves in this situation based on assurances they got from me.” – President Obama, Nov. 7

Obama’s promise that if you liked your healthcare plan, you’d be able to keep it was a key talking point for Democrats during the debate over the healthcare law. It quickly proved false, and along with the poorly functioning website, was one of the biggest political problems for the Obama administration in 2013.

“Even if it takes changing the law, the president should honor the commitment the federal government made to those people and let them keep what they got.” – Former President Bill Clinton, Nov. 12

President Obama was already dealing with severe blowback for “keep your plan” promise. Clinton’s remark added fuel to the fire.

“On the website, I was not informed directly that the website would not be working the way it was supposed to.” – President Obama, Nov. 14

Republicans said Obama’s admission confirms their view that he is disengaged from governing and the actions of his administration.
