Week ahead: Team Obama to push healthcare enrollment

The Obama administration will pull out all the stops this week to encourage ObamaCare sign-ups as the clock runs out on the 2014 enrollment period.

With roughly five weeks left before the deadline, Vice President Biden will make two talk-show appearances to promote the healthcare law to viewers who may have tuned out other advertising.

{mosads}Biden is scheduled to appear on “Late Night with Seth Meyers” on Monday and “The View” on Tuesday, where ObamaCare will be the central topic of discussion.

The Affordable Care Act could also get free publicity from Michelle Obama’s media blitz marking the fourth anniversary of her Let’s Move! campaign.

The first lady will almost certainly urge the uninsured to sign up for coverage at one of a long list of healthy-eating events this week.

In addition to several speeches and summits, she is scheduled to give interviews to “The Today Show,” “Extra,” the “Rachael Ray Show” and “Despierta América” — four more opportunities for the White House to reach crucial groups with its healthcare message.

Back in Washington, Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius will deliver the keynote address Thursday at the Care Innovation Summit and is sure to discuss the current state of ObamaCare’s rollout.

Other speakers will include Francis Collins, director of the National Institutes of Health; former Senate Majority Leaders Tom Daschle (D-S.D.) and Bill Frist (R-Tenn.); and former White House budget director Peter Orszag.

The event is sponsored by The Aspen Institute and The Advisory Board Company.

Finally, on Capitol Hill, lawmakers are facing a busy week of healthcare-related hearings and events.

The Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee will launch the week on Tuesday with a hearing on mental health treatment options and trends.

On Wednesday, the House Energy and Commerce Health subcommittee will look at the possible consequences of new proposed rules changing Medicare Part D.

Also Wednesday, the House Judiciary Committee will delve into ObamaCare implementation delays in a hearing on what Republicans call executive overreach on the part of the administration.

In the House Oversight Committee, lawmakers will examine the treatment of whistle-blowers at the Food and Drug Administration.

The Senate Appropriations subcommittee governing healthcare spending will look at the economic and personal toll of Alzheimer’s disease.

The National Coalition on Health Care will hold a forum on bundled payments in the Rayburn House Office Building.

And closing out the week, the Energy and Commerce subcommittee on Oversight and Investigations will hold a hearing Thursday on counterfeit drugs.

Off Capitol Hill, Arkansas Gov. Mike Beebe will discuss ObamaCare with journalists Monday at an event sponsored by the Kaiser Family Foundation.

On Thursday, the conservative Galen Institute will host a daylong conference at the National Press Club previewing the debate over ObamaCare in 2014. The event will feature a panel of Republican lawmakers involved in healthcare policy and a debate between journalists Ezra Klein and Avik Roy.
