GOP demands answers on O-Care subsidies

Republicans are demanding follow-up from the Obama administration after a report that found hundreds of thousands of people might be receiving incorrect insurance subsidies on ObamaCare’s exchanges.

Members of the House Energy and Commerce Committee sent letters Monday to federal health officials and three private contractors involved in processing applications for the insurance marketplace.

The letters asked for briefings and documents on the problem, which was revealed Friday in a report by The Washington Post.

{mosads}In a statement critical of the Obama administration, committee Chairman Fred Upton (R-Mich.) said it’s “clear that [ObamaCare] is not ‘working the way it’s supposed to.’ “

“The administration’s incompetence could mean big headaches for the Americans who struggled through HealthCare.gov only to be given the wrong information. … It’s time for the administration to be transparent with the American people,” Upton said.

The Post reported that the government might have paid incorrect subsidies — either over or underpayments — to more than 1 million people during ObamaCare’s first enrollment period.

Affected consumers have been notified about a problem with their applications, but few have submitted proof of income that would help determine the correct subsidy.

Even so, the Post reported, federal health officials do not yet have a system to cross-check the documents against the original applications to solve the problem.

Republicans jumped on the news this weekend as evidence that the healthcare law remains mired in problems.

The Energy and Commerce Committee sent letters to the Department of Health and Human Services, as well as Accenture, CGI Federal and Serco on Monday.
