O-Care abortion report prompts call for votes

A leading conservative group is urging the Senate to vote on two anti-abortion bills in the wake of a federal investigation that found ObamaCare subsidies are being used to pay for abortions. 

The Family Research Council (FRC) called on Senate leaders to bring up bills that would codify and expand a ban on using taxpayer money for abortion and to require heightened disclosure of abortion coverage on the law’s exchanges. 

{mosads}The push for votes comes as Republicans refocus their abortion attacks for the midterm elections on the report by the Government Accountability Office. 

FRC President Tony Perkins said the study vindicated anti-abortion activists, who have argued since 2010 that ObamaCare subsidizes abortions. 

“Americans should not be forced to play a game of moral Russian roulette when they select a healthcare plan,” Perkins said in a statement. 

“I urge the Senate to act now so during the next open enrollment season that begins on November 15th, Americans can make truly informed decisions regarding what kinds of healthcare plans they want.” 

There is little chance that the Democratic-led Senate will hold votes on the measures, sponsored by Rep. Chris Smith (R-N.J.) and Sen. Roger Wicker (R-Miss.). But the issue could rear its head next year if the GOP takes control of the upper chamber.
