Four Americans arrive in Nebraska for Ebola monitoring

Four Americans who were potentially exposed to Ebola while in Sierra Leone have arrived at the University of Nebraska Medical Center for observation. 

{mosads}Hospital spokesman Taylor Wilson told Reuters that the four people are “not sick and not contagious,” but they will be housed at the medical center and monitored for symptoms for 21 days. 

An American healthcare worker who had been in Sierra Leone contracted Ebola and was transported to the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Md., arriving Friday.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention then said it is tracing contacts with this patient to see who else could have been exposed, and is developing plans to return them to the U.S. “out of an abundance of caution.”

Those returning will be near either the University of Nebraska, the NIH or Emory University in Atlanta, and will be monitored for symptoms and self-isolate “as appropriate,” the CDC said.

More than 10,000 people have died from Ebola, nearly all of the victims lived in Sierra Leone, Liberia or Guinea, according to the World Health Organization. 

The worst of the disease seems to have passed, though. President Obama said last month that the U.S. had “risen to the challenge” of Ebola and that all but 100 of the 2,800 U.S. troops sent to West Africa to fight the disease would return home by the end of April.
