CDC to launch second phase of anti-smoking campaign

“Despite the known dangers of smoking, it remains the leading cause of preventable death and disease in the United States, killing more than 440,000 Americans each year,” the CDC stated online.

“More than 8 million Americans are living with a smoking-related disease, and every day more than 1,000 youth younger than 18 become daily smokers.”

The American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network praised the campaign for preparing to reveal the “real consequences of tobacco use.”

“We hope the CDC’s new ads will serve as a wake-up call for smokers and would-be tobacco users about tobacco’s lethal impact on one’s health,” the group’s CEO John R. Seffrin said in a statement.
