Top Dem wants hearing with EpiPen maker and Martin Shkreli

The top Democrat on the House Oversight Committee is calling for a hearing featuring the makers of EpiPens and controversial former pharmaceutical executive Martin Shkreli.

{mosads}Rep. Elijah Cummings (D-Md.) called for the hearing featuring Mylan executives after an uproar over the price increases the company has enacted on EpiPens, the devices that treat serious allergic reactions.

Shkreli, famous for steeply hiking the price of a different drug as CEO of Turing Pharmaceuticals, responded on Twitter that he would be willing to testify as well.

In February, Shkreli appeared at a hearing about his company’s price hikes but cited his Fifth Amendment right not to incriminate himself.

“I am encouraged that Mr. Shkreli has agreed to come back to testify before the Oversight Committee,” Cummings said in a statement. “The tactics we have seen recently with Mylan are not limited to a few ‘bad apples,’ but are prevalent throughout the entire drug industry, as our investigation has shown repeatedly and as Mr. Shkreli himself has indicated.”

It is unclear whether the Republican majority will agree to hold the hearing.
