OMB chief: ObamaCare an ‘unmitigated disaster’

Mick Mulvaney, the director of the Office of Management and Budget, on Tuesday called ObamaCare an “unmitigated disaster,” arguing it is unfair to compare the GOP’s new healthcare plan to what “ObamaCare might have been.”

“You can’t even compare ObamaCare right now, because what everyone seems to want to ignore is the fact that ObamaCare is an unmitigated disaster,” Mulvaney told NBC’s “Today.”

Republicans on Monday rolled out two new bills to repeal and replace ObamaCare, a signature campaign promise of President Trump.

The new legislation would undo ObamaCare’s Medicaid expansion and eliminate the individual mandate that requires individuals to purchase health coverage or pay a fine. The plan, dubbed by Senate Minority Leader Charles Schumer (D-N.Y.) as “Trumpcare,” would also create a new tax credit system to incentivize individuals to purchase coverage.

{mosads}Mulvaney, who previously served in Congress before assuming his post as budget director, said ObamaCare is in “a death spiral.”

“So I don’t think it’s fair to want to compare what we’re proposing today to what ObamaCare might have been,” Mulvaney added.

“You have to compare it to what ObamaCare is, and it’s a failure. And by that comparison this new program is going to be a tremendous success.”
