Schumer: Dems will fight ‘tooth and nail’ against ‘TrumpCare’
Senate Minority Leader Charles Schumer (D-N.Y.) on Tuesday derided the House GOP healthcare plan as “TrumpCare” and vowed that Democrats will fight it “tooth and nail.”
He said the plan — titled the American Health Care Act — would slash taxes on people earning more than $250,000 a year. Taking into account all the tax breaks going to millionaires and billionaires, Schumer said, the average benefit for the rich would be $200,000.
“This is a tax cut for the wealthy with some health insurance provisions tacked onto it,” he said.
{mosads}Schumer also called the plan “on of the biggest assaults” on women’s health “we’ve seen yet,” citing cuts in funding for maternity care, mammograms and a provision to defund Planned Parenthood.
Sen. Ron Wyden (Ore.), the senior Democrat on the Finance Committee, warned that the bill would cut $125 billion from the Medicare Trust Fund, breaking President Trump’s campaign promise not to touch the entitlement program.
Schumer told reporters that the proposed Medicare cuts would shorten the solvency of the program so that if passed it “will now run out of money by 2025.”
Schumer also questioned whether it would really bar health insurance companies from discriminating against people with pre-existing conditions, a feature of the plan Republicans have advertised.
Sen. Chris Murphy (D-Conn.) called it a “dumpster fire of a bill.”
