Freedom Caucus chairman: ‘This is not the end of the debate’ on healthcare

Rep. Mark Meadows (R-N.C.) on Sunday said the conversation on healthcare is not over after the GOP healthcare plan was pulled last week. 

“This is not the end of the debate,” Meadows, chairman of the House Freedom Caucus, said on ABC’s “This Week.”

“We may be in overtime, but I can tell you at the very end of the day, the most valuable player will be President Trump on this because he will deliver. He’s committed to the American people.”

Meadows said no one has been more “self-critiquing” than himself.

“I can tell you as I’ve looked at all of this, I’ve said could I have spent a little bit more time, should I have spent more time with the Tuesday Group, more time with Democrats to find some consensus,” he said.

He added that it’s incumbent upon the conservatives and moderates to come together to find consensus. 

{mosads}The comments come after Speaker Paul Ryan (R-Wis.) on Friday pulled the GOP healthcare plan amid dwindling support from Republicans.

The move marked the first legislative defeat for President Trump and followed seven years of rhetoric from Republicans who campaigned on repealing and replacing ObamaCare.

On Sunday, the president tweeted that the conservative House Freedom Caucus, along with the Club of Growth and Heritage Action for America, “saved” Planned Parenthood and ObamaCare.

Meadows also said Sunday there are “no conversations” going on about replacing Ryan.

“It’s all hands on desk with regards to ObamaCare, tax reform, the border wall, ” Meadows added.
