Poll: Little support for GOP healthcare effort in ‘Trump counties’

There is little support in counties that fueled President Trump’s electoral victory for GOP efforts on healthcare reform, according to a new poll.

Just 12 percent of adults in key counties across the country that supported Trump in the election back the legislation the House passed to repeal and replace ObamaCare, according to an NBC/Wall Street Journal poll released Tuesday.

Another 41 percent of those surveyed in so-called “Trump counties” – including Republicans, Democrats and independents – called the House GOP bill passed in early May a “bad idea” while 47 percent had no opinion or were unsure.

The survey was conducted July 8-12, before the most recent GOP efforts moving ahead on a repeal-and-replace bill in the Senate collapsed.

The poll surveyed 439 counties in 16 states that either flipped from supporting President Obama to Trump, or where Trump outpaced 2012 GOP nominee Mitt Romney.

The states included in the survey included Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Indiana, Iowa, Maine, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Nevada, New Hampshire, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Virginia and Wisconsin.

The survey found just 25 percent support among Trump voters in the counties, while 16 percent said the House bill was a bad idea and 59 percent were unsure.

Three in four voters who backed Hillary Clinton in those counties, 75 percent, called the House legislation a bad idea. The rest were unsure, with none supporting the measure.

Senate GOP leaders announced Monday that they would seek a clean repeal of the Affordable Care Act amid lingering divisions among Republicans.

On Tuesday, three GOP senators announced their opposition to such a clean repeal plan, effectively killing it.

The survey of 600 adults has an overall margin of error of 4 percentage points.
