Colbert on ObamaCare repeal bill: ‘This is beyond beating a dead horse’

Stephen Colbert on Wednesday ripped the GOP’s latest effort to repeal and replace ObamaCare.

At the beginning of his monologue on “The Late Show,” Colbert said the “thinkable” happened in Washington, D.C., this week.

“Republicans are trying to repeal and replace ObamaCare, again,” Colbert said.

In July, Republicans tried a plan called the “Better Care Reconciliation Act,” Colbert said.

“It would have cut Medicaid, increased premiums and left millions uninsured,” Colbert said. “Whereas this new bill has a different name.”

Colbert noted that the GOP needs to move fast because due to Senate rules, they are facing a Sept. 30 deadline.

“It’s a race against the clock,” he said. “They’ve got 10 days to overhaul the healthcare system or everybody lives.”

The Senate could potentially vote on the latest ObamaCare repeal-and-replace plan next week. 

The proposal, sponsored by Sens. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) and Bill Cassidy (R-La.), would largely dismantle ObamaCare and convert its funding to block grants. States would get the funding to design their own programs.

The new measure would also give states a way to repeal protections for people with pre-existing conditions, a controversial move that opponents of the bill are denouncing.
